Sebaste was conquered by Alexander the Great during his sweep through Palestine, in 332 B.C., and destroyed in 108 B.C. by John Hyrcanus I, who forcibly converted its Samaritan residents to Judaism. Pompey the Great rebuilt the city in the year 63 B.C., and Augustus gave it to Herod the Great, who rebuilt it, and renamed it Sebaste (Sebastos means ''Augustus,'' in Greek). According to Josephus, Herod built a magnificent white temple (no doubt the one pictured on this coin) that could be seen by ships in the Mediterranean Sea, twenty miles away. Struck 190-191 A.D., this historic coin is from the city known today as Sebastia, in the heart of the Holy Land. The city was originally the capital of the Ten Tribes of [Image] ancient Israel, built in 876 B.C. by King Omri, the 6th [Image] king of Israel. The city's biblical name was Shomron, and is referred to in the Bible, cf. 1 Kings 16:24: ''And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, the owner of the hill, Samaria.'' Since it was strategically located on a hill that commanded access to Megiddo, Jerusalem, and the River Jordan, King Omri transferred his residence there from Terzah to make it his capital. Following Omri's reign, Ahab, influenced by his Phoenician wife Jezebel, built a temple (later destroyed) to honor the pagan god Baal. Things got worse under Jeroboam II, with the development of an aristocracy, viewed as a symbol of decadence by the prophets Hosea and Amos. Amos contrasted the impoverished conditions suffered by the poor with the luxury of aristocrat's palaces, predicting ''I will make Samaria as a heap of stones in the field when a vineyard is planted, and I will bring down the stones thereof into the valley and will lay her foundations bare.'' The prophecy of Amos was fulfilled when the city was besieged for three years by the Assyrians, who finally conquered it in 722 B.C., thus ending the Ten Tribes of Israel's existence as a nation. NOTE TO BIDDERS: This coin is from a collection that I put together for myself, and most coins in the collection are of better quality than what is available elsewhere these days. Many of them are interesting or scarcer types, and there are no duplicates, so this is a good opportunity for the serious collector of Roman coins to buy something nice, at a reasonable price.
