ID Description Price RP2 Lydia, Thyatiera, Commodus, AD 177-192, AE 43 (39.44g). Obv: $700 Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus r. Rev: Asklepios stg. r. facing Apollo Tyrimnaios stg. l. Unlisted in BMC, Cop, Von Aulock. aVF. This massive piece belongs to the second century series of medallions commemorating alliances between various Greek cities of Asia Minor. Thyatiera’s bond with Pergamon is shown here by the inclusion of Asklepios on the reverse. Such medallions are very rare, with this one being apparently unlisted in the major references. Another example of this type was in the famous Mabbott sale of 1968 and, although not as nice as the present example, was estimated at $500 (60’s dollars, mind you...). Decent near-black surfaces and a stable pit at 7 o’clock on the reverse. An attractive, impressive and very rare piece.
