Its remains lie under the modern town of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It was founded by Philip of Macedonia in the 4th century B.C., after he conquered a Thracian settlement, fortified it, and named it after himself. In the 1st century A.D., the Romans conquered the town, and built solid fortresses and monumental buildings, including a stadium for 30,000 spectators, an amphitheater seating 5,000 people, water reservoirs, and other public buildings decorated with multi-colored mosaics.
