Philippopolis was described as the most beautiful of all
        Thracian towns. Its remains lie under the modern town of
        Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It was founded by Philip of Macedonia in
        the 4th century B.C., after he conquered a Thracian
        settlement, fortified it, and named it after himself. In
        the 1st century A.D., the Romans conquered the town, and
        built solid fortresses and monumental buildings, including
        a stadium for 30,000 spectators, an amphitheater seating
        5,000 people, water reservoirs, and other public buildings
        decorated with multi-colored mosaics.
