SNG Cop 408. Ephesus was the location of one of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor (now located in Turkey) at which Paul of Tarsus preached (Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians, New Testament). Saint Paul (originally named Saul, d.67 A.D.), was born in the Cilician city of Tarsus, in Asia Minor, which made him a Roman citizen. He was a member of the Jewish sect known as the Pharisees, a zealous group that advocated strict adherence to Jewish Law. Ironically, Paul began his life work as a persecutor of the early Christians. Later, although he never met Jesus of Nazareth, Paul converted to the new religion, and his greatest contribution was the rejection of Jewish Law, in order to promote Christianity as a universal religion, not one only for Jews. This led to a rapid spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. NOTE TO BIDDERS: This coin is from a collection that I put together for myself, and most coins in the collection are of better quality than what is available elsewhere these days. Many of them are interesting or scarcer types, and there are no duplicates, so this is a good opportunity for the serious collector of Roman coins to buy something nice, at a reasonable price.
