Commodus, Æ Sestertius, 28mm, 22.0 grams. Obverse: L AVREL COMMODVS AVG TR P, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Commodus, as co-Augustus, facing right. Reverse: VOTA PVBLICA IMP II COS P P S C, Commodus stands, facing left, sacrificing over a tripod-altar, to the left of which stands a Victimarius, about to strike a bull with an ax. Struck 178 A.D., RIC III (Marcus Aurelius) 1594 (Rare), Sear/RCV #5830, page 405, valued by David Sear at $450.00 in VF. Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before. NOTE TO BIDDERS: This coin is from a collection that I put together for myself, and most coins in the collection are of better quality than what is available elsewhere these days. Many of them are interesting or scarcer types, and there are no duplicates, so this is a good opportunity for the serious collector of Roman coins to buy something nice, at a reasonable price.
