Commodus, Æ Sestertius, L AEL AVREL COMM AVG P FEL, laureate head of Commodus, facing right. / LIB AVG P M TR P XVII COS VII P P S C, Libertas stands, facing left, holding a pileus and a scepter, star in field. Struck 192 A.D. The presence of the star on some coins issued late in Commodus' reign is referred to in BMC merely as a good omen, however Herodian records that a comet appeared at that time. F, scarce late issue. Sear/RCV 5764, RIC 619 (Scarce), BMC 692, (23.4 gm.). Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before.
