This Denarius was part of the first coinage issued for Commodus, in conjunction with his father's sixth Congiarium on July 7, 175 A.D. According to RIC, Commodus received the toga virilis, July 7, 175 A.D., on the occasion of a Congiarium (Liberalitas VI), and shortly afterwards he was given a military command on the frontier in consequence of renewed hostilities by the Iazyges. A decisive victory is recorded about September which was followed by the eighth Salutatio, and a little later by the assumption of the title Sarmaticus. In December Commodus was granted the Tribunicia potestas, and shortly afterwards Aurelius set out on an expedition to the East with a view to settling affairs after the rebellion. On this journey he was accompanied by Faustina and Commodus, but the Empress was seized by a fatal illness and died at Halala near Mount Taurus. NOTE TO BIDDERS: This coin is from a collection of Commodus that I put together for myself, and most coins in the collection are of better quality (nice grade, centering, etc.) than what is available elsewhere these days. Many of them are interesting or scarcer types, and there are no duplicates, so this is a good opportunity for the serious collector of Roman denarii to buy something nice, at a reasonable price.
