Commodus, Æ Sestertius, M COMMODVS ANTON AVG PIVS BRIT, laureate head of Commodus, facing right. / PM TR P X IMP VII COS IIII P P S C, with VICT BRIT in the exergue, Victoria, personifying victory, seated right on a pile of shields, inscribing a shield. Struck 184-85 A.D., this coinage commemorates the Roman victory over the barbarian invasion of the frontier in Britain, and the campaigns of Ulpius Marcellus in Scotland. Nice VF+, rare so nice! RIC III 452, RCV 5826, BMC IV 560, (18.2 gm.). From my personal collection.

Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before.
