Commodus, Æ Sestertius, M COMMODVS ANTONINVS AVG, Laureate head of Commodus, facing right. / LIBERALITAS AVG TR P V IMP IIII COS II S C. Commodus is shown seated on a platform, attended by an officer, with Liberalitas, personifying generosity, holding a tessera and a cornucopiae, and a citizen mounting the steps to the platform to receive a donative from Commodus. An historic coin, struck 180 A.D., when Commodus inherited the throne upon the death of Marcus Aurelius. VF, scarce type! RCV 5765, RIC III 300 (Scarce), BMC IV 377-80, (20.1 gm.). Ex-CNG, and from my personal collection. Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before.
