Commodus, Æ Sestertius, L AVREL COMMODVS AVG TR P V, laureate and draped bust of Commodus, facing right. / IOVI VICTORI IMP III COS II P P S C, Jupiter, father/king of the gods, seated, facing right, holding Victoria and a scepter. An historical coin: struck 180 A.D. The TR P V (conferred December 10, 179) obverse was used when he became sole Augustus (after Aurelius' death March 17, 180), and the IMP III is early in 180, because that changed to IMP IIII upon his return to Rome soon thereafter, making this the first Sestertius struck for Commodus as sole Emperor, at the age of 18. An uneven strike and minor excavation marks, otherwise Nearly EF, beautiful patina, and scarce! RIC III 291 (Scarce), RCV 5760, BMC IV 1720var., (28.2 gm.). From my personal collection. Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before.
