            Commodus. (177-192 AD). Gold aureus (7.15 gm). Rome, 192 AD. L AEL 
            AVREL CO – MM AVG P FEL, laureate bust right, winged Medusa head and 
            snake on front shoulder and fold of aegis around back of neck / P M 
            TR P XVII IMP VIII COS VII P P, Victory advancing left, holding 
            wreath and palm. Cohen 567 (150 Fr.). RIC 237a. Calico 2310 (same 
            obverse die). Bust variety of BMCRE 327. Rare, as are all aurei of 
            Commodus as sole Augustus. Elegant obverse die with aegis on 
            shoulders, also used with the Libertas standing reverse type of the 
            same year, BMCRE 397, pl. 99.3. Nearly mint state.
