Commodus, AR Denarius, M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT P P, laureate head of Commodus, facing right. / ROM FEL P M TR P XVI COS VI, Roma, the city goddess of Rome, seated, facing left, holding Victoria and a spear, with a shield at her side. Struck 190-191 A.D., this is an unusual and very rare double strike, which received part of the design of a second blank beneath it. VF+ [Error variant of: RSC 655, RIC III 224, BMC IV 305, (2.7 gm.). Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180 apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before. As Emperor of Rome, Commodus spent much of his time in the arena, playing the role of a gladiator, and has been the subject of major Hollywood movies, most recently, ''Gladiator,'' starring Russell Crowe, with Joaquin Phoenix portraying Commodus.
