FIDEI COH translates to ''Loyalty of the Cohorts'' (i.e., the army). Struck 190-191 A.D., after the fall of the despised Praetorian Prefect, Cleander. Nice VF, scarce type, especially with complete legends, RIC III 220 (Scarce), RSC 127, BMC IV 298, RCV5638, (3.0 gm.). Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before. NOTE TO BIDDERS: This coin is from a collection of Commodus that I put together for myself, and most coins in the collection are of better quality (nice grade, centering, etc.) than what is available elsewhere these days. Many of them are interesting or scarcer types, and there are no duplicates, so this is a good opportunity for the serious collector of Roman denarii to buy something nice, at a reasonable price.
