Description This piece was minted in 181 AD, during the reign of Commodus, who ruled from 177-192 AD. He proved himself to be a most unworthy successor to a noble father, retiring from public life soon after his accession and leaving the government of the empire in the hands of a series of favorites. He seems to have become quite mad in his later years, believing himself to be Hercules, and demanding that the people worship him as such. He even went so far as to disgrace the purple by fighting wild beasts in the amphitheatre like a common gladiator. After numerous unsuccessful plots on his life, he was finally assassinated on December 31, 192 AD. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Commodus facing right, with legends M.ANTONINVS.COMMODVS.AVG. The reverse features Felicitas standing left, holding caduceus and sceptre, with legends TR.P.VII.IMP.IIII.COS.III.P.P. Coin grades F+, with clear devices and legends all around, and a nice portrait. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-831a. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW site at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
