Near EF, RSC 779, RIC III 2, BMC IV (Marcus Aurelius) 811, RCV 5705, (3.0 gm.). Struck early 180 A.D., portraying Commodus, as sole Emperor, at age 18. This is a transitional Denarius, listed in RIC III among the first issued for Commodus as sole emperor, still without a beard, after Aurelius' death March 17, 180. Although listed in BMC among the last issues of Commodus as co-emperor, while his father was still alive (the legends would be correct for that), RIC is probably correct. Fortuna was often used to indicate an Emperor's travels to/from Rome, and it is likely Commodus was traveling back to Rome after his father's death when this Denarius was struck. Lucius Aurelius Commodus succeeded his father, Marcus Aurelius, as Rome's Emperor when he was only 19. Aurelius tried to prepare his son for rule, by having him serve as his co-Emperor, starting in 177, but his death in 180, apparently left the job unfinished. Living under Commodus, who eventually became insane, became intolerable for Rome's enemies, its soldiers, and citizens - even members of the Senate. He planned to ring in the New Year in 193 by parading as a gladiator, but his enemies had had enough, and assassinated him the night before. NOTE TO BIDDERS: This coin is from a collection of Commodus that I put together for myself, and most coins in the collection are of better quality (nice grade, centering, etc.) than what is available elsewhere these days. Many of them are interesting or scarcer types, and there are no duplicates, so this is a good opportunity for the serious collector of Roman denarii to buy something nice, at a reasonable price.
