Struck 195 A.D., RIC 2, RSC 9, RCV 6140, Purchased from Forum Ancient Coins. VF+, and RARE. CLODIUS ALBINUS, Caesar 193-195, Augustus 195-197 A.D. Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus came from a wealthy family in North Africa, and later rose to Senator. Clodius was serving as Governor of Britain when Didius Julianus bought the throne of Rome from the Praetorian Guard after the murder of Commodus. Clodius supported Septimius Severus, who rewarded Clodius with the title of Caesar. However, once his rivals to the throne were gone, Severus had to consider his two young sons, and Clodius had no future as Caesar. This motivated him to break with Severus, by being proclaimed Augustus. His rule was cut short when Severus eventually defeated him, and executed Clodius and his family.
