Description Coin was minted for Roman Egypt between 43 and 44 AD, during the reign of Claudius, who ruled from 41-54 AD. Claudius was thought to be simple-minded, and a safe choice as emperor for the praetorians who murdered the hated Caligula. It soon became clear that he was not as weak minded as people thought, and in fact proved to be a very capable administrator. In 43, he personally led the invasion of Britain, beginning the Roman occupation of the island that would last into the fifth century. He died in 54 AD, most likely the result of poison administered by his wife, Agrippina Junior, in order that her son, Nero, could assume the purple. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Claudius facing right, with Greek legends for TI.KLAV.KAI.SEBAS.GERMA. The reverse features a hippopotamus standing right, with Greek legend AYTOKPA above, and the regnal year L Delta in the exergue. Coin shows typical granular surfaces, but otherwise grades AF/F, with clear devices and partial legends visible. A very decent example of this early Egyptian type, catalouged as Milne 100. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for purchases of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW site at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
