Roman Imperial Copper As, Rome Mint, Circa 41-42 AD. Obverse: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM TR P IMP; Bare head of Claudius left. Reverse: S C; Minerva advancing right brandishing spear and holding shield. Condition: Near EF, Coin at auction is much, much better than picture. This coin has excellent smooth surfaces with a beautiful dark brown patina. Both sides have excellent centering with the obverse having a full legend except for having the tips of IMP off. Excellent strike on the legends with some weakness on the high points of the devices, more so on the reverse. Superb portrait of Claudius with interesting style. (Similar to Corpus Nummorum Romanorum, Vol 13, page 237, number 585; and, Sear Millennium 1853). Almost no wear on the legends, either side, indicates the coin has not seen much circulation. Thick heavy flan for an As, being 13.31 grams and 3.7 mm thick, in the range of a Dupondius of the time. This coin is a choice example of this issue. Valuation: Why Valuation? This is a heavy As with a great patina making it a choice example of this issue. Some As only weigh in the 9-10 gram range The most current price information is found in Sear Roman Coins and their Values, Millennium Edition, where it is valued at $200 in VF and $600 in EF. Size: 13.31 grams; die axis = 6.5; 3.7 mm thick; flan 29.2 mm diameter. References: RIC I 100; BMCRE 1489; CBN 179; C 84 variety; Sear Mill. 1861.
