Description TRAJAN COINS AND ANTIQUITIES ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sestertius of Claudius ----------------------------------------------------------------- Decscription: * 30 mm * 15.5 g * Listed in RIC#99 * (T)I CLAUD(IUS CAESAR AUG PM TRP IMP) * (SP)ES (AUGUSTA SC) * Struck C41-50AD Coin has a greenish patina and a nice portrait of Claudius. Reverse depicts spes holding flower. Due to the weight and style I believe this is of non Roman mint origin. Non Roman mints in Rhineland, Gaul, Spain, and Britain minted coins based on circulating roman examples to augment the dwindling supply of coinage. Scholars have suggested that Claudius' government condoned this due to the lack of supply of coins after the closing of the Lyons mint and many mints in Spain. It is rare to find a sestertius or dupondis of this style as the as was the usual imitation. Coin was originally purchased from a CNG auction. Other coins may be found on my webpage at http://www.wctc.net/~msersch/coins.htm WI residents must add 5% sales tax. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item. --------------------------------------------------------------- Announcements | Register | eBay Store | SafeHarbor | Feedback Forum | About eBay Copyright © 1995-1999 eBay Inc.
