Claudius was saluted Augustus by the Praetorians who had murdered his nephew Caligula. He was thought to be weak-minded, and thus easily controlled, but he proved himself to be an able administrator, and personally took part in the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 AD, the beginning of an occupation that would last until the fifth century. He married his niece, Agrippina Junior, in 49 AD, and the following year Claudius would adopt her son, Nero as his heir. This would prove to be his undoing, as he would be poisoned in 54 AD, most likely on the orders of Agrippina, in order that Nero would become emperor. The obverse of this type depicts the bare head of Claudius facing left, with legends TI.CLAVDIVS.CAESAR.AVG.P.M.TR.P.IMP.P.P. The reverse features Constantia standing left, holding spear, with legends CONSTANTIAE.AVGVSTI.SC. Coin is struck on a smallish flan, and shows some light granularity, but otherwise grades AVF/F, with clear devices and legends where struck up. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RIC-95. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for purchases of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
