            Claudius As

            Claudius, AD 41-54. A bronze As attributed as RIC 95.

            Obverse: Bare head left. Legend is .TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM
            TRP IMP

            Reverse: Constantia, helmeted and in military dress, standing
            left, right hand raised and in left hand holding a long
            spear. Legend is SC to left and right of figure.

            History: TIBERIVS CLAVDIVS NERO was born on August 1, 10 BC
            to Nero Claudius Drusus and Antonia. He had a medical problem
            which some believe was cerebral palsy, and therefore he was
            never seriously considered for the succession. Only through
            the deaths of all other candidates was he elevated upon the
            death of his nephew Caligula on January 24, 41. He reigned
            capably, and Britain was added to the Empire. He married his
            fourth wife Agrippina Jr. in 49, and was poisoned by her on
            October 13, 54 to put her son Nero upon the throne (had
            Claudius lived, his son Britannicus may have succeeded him).

            Condition: The coin is in gVF condition on a small flan that
  [Image]   affects the legends. It has a dark green patina with earthen
            tones. A beautiful portrait and very slender lettering in the
            legends. Possibly a Gaulish issue. The coin is 26 mm in
            diameter and weighs 11.84 gms.
