Description Gold Aureus of Roman Emperor Claudius and his Niece/Wife! [Image] Claudius. 41-54 A.D. Tiberius Claudius Nero Germanicus was born in 10 B.C., the youngest son of Nero Claudius Drusus and Antonia. His life as an antiquarian was rudely interrupted when praetorian guardsmen murdered his nephew Caligula in the palace on January 24 of 41 A.D. Claudius was fearful, thinking their intent was to remove the rest of the Julio-Claudian males from positions of power. The guards had other things in mind, though, and hailed Claudius as the new emperor. He was found (hiding in the palace behind a curtain) and was dragged out to the praetorian camp to receive the honors. He proceeded to donate 15,000 to each of the praetorians and proved to be an able administrator for the empire. His rule was marked by palace intrigues, however, particularly with his various wives. Degrees of paranoia were also seen in the emperor, resulting in at least 35 senators and 300 knights being put to death during his tenure. Claudius had a measure of respect with the troops with his distinguished lineage, personally taking part in the invasion of Britain in 43 A.D. and in the capture of Colchester. The real threat to his power was primarily within his family circle. Claudius planted the seeds of his future demise in 49 A.D. when he married his niece Agrippina (Junior). In the three years to follow she pursued her own agenda of removing palace supporters of Claudius, replacing them with people loyal to her and her son Nero. Agrippina made sure many honors were heaped upon Nero, to the detriment of Claudius' own son Britannicus. On October 12, 54 A.D. she played out her final hand to Claudius, serving him up a plate of poisonous mushrooms. Mint of Rome. ICG VF-25. RIC1, 80, struck 50-54 A.D. Interesting marital aureus of Claudius with his wife Agrippina on the reverse. A scarce issue with great historical appeal. NO RESERVE!!!
