   Claudius, AR denarius, (3.67g) Eastern Mint, 41-42 AD, 11:00 die
   axis, TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P Laureate head left. / EX S C
   OB CIVES SERVATOS in Corona Civitas, oak wreath. RSC 35; BMC 18. VF,
   unusual style and flan shape, scratch on lower jaw, another on neck.

   In the confused period following the assassination of Caligula and
[ ]the ascension of the Claudius, a shortage of precious metal coinage  [ ]
   occurred. The coins of Caligula were apparently recalled and
   destroyed by an act of the Senate that certainly destroyed all
   statues of Caligula. At the same time Claudius needed silver to pay
   praetorians and legionaries an ascension bonus. For several months,
   the mint at Lugdunum was put back "online" to strike silver.
   Apparently, a third mint, somewhere in the East, struck some denarii
   too. The Eastern denarii have 12:00 die axis, more stylized portrait,
   less round flans, and stick-like reverse letters in the legend. Latin
   legend Eastern mints of the time include: Perinthus / The Balkan
   Mint, Ephesus, Antioch, Caesarea, and Cyprus.
