SNG Levante Suppl. 1-269 (same dies), SNG Paris-1541 (same obv. die). Obv: Bust r. wearing robe and wreath of Demiourgos. Rx: Elephant standing l., wreath of Demiourgos on its back decorated with letters OMAKK, Greek legend around calls Tarsus Antoninian, Severan, and Hadrianic. Caracalla, underway to his Parthian campaign, visited Tarsus c. August 215 AD. During his visit he honored the city in numerous ways, for example by assuming the city office of Demiourgos, whose dress he wears on the obverse of our coin, and by granting the city the titles 'first, greatest, most beautiful', which are abbreviated by the letters MAK attached to the wreath on the reverse of the coin. The additional KO on the wreath apparently refer to the koinoboulion, the provincial assembly. The elephant on the reverse of our coin probably refers to the elephants that we know Caracalla had added to his army for his upcoming Parthian campaign. See R. Ziegler, Staedtisches Prestige und kaiserliche Politik, Duesseldorf 1985, pp. 79-85. Somewhat corroded obverse.
