Nearly extremely fine Ex Polak Collection (MMAG, 1962, lot 536). During his visit to Judaea in 130 CE, the emperor Hadrian refounded the ruined city of Jerusalem as a Roman colony. He named it Aelia Capitolina, Aelia from his own family name and Capitolina announcing his intention to construct a temple to Jupiter Capitolinus on the site of the razed Jewish temple. Jews were forbidden to enter the city, which was to provide a home for retired legionaries. The foundation of Aelia Capitolina was one of the chief causes of the Bar Kochba Revolt. While the revolt probably delayed construction of the new city, it could not prevent the eventual realization of Hadrian's plans: the pagan city of Aelia Capitolina replaced Jerusalem until after the Arab conquest. Estimated Value: $ 2,000 ... Lot was unsold. From the Freeman & Sear Mail Bid Sale 12, Closed October 28, 2005. Re-used by permission of Freeman & Sear, www.freemanandsear.com
