Description Coin was minted for Roman Thrace, Anchiualus during the reign of Caracalla, who ruled from 198-217 AD. Caracalla was the son of Septimius Severus and brother of Geta, and his reign was noted for its extravagance and cruelty. Caracalla even went so far as to arrange the execution of Geta, who reigned jointly with Caracalla, in the presence of their mother, Julia Domna. The one notable acheievment of this reign was the granting of the name and privileges of Roman citizenship to all free inhabitants of the empire. Caracalla was assassinated between Emesa and Carrhae by Macrinus, who briefly succeeded him as emperor. The obverse of this piece depicts the laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Caracalla facing right, with Greek legends for AV.K.M.AV.ANTONINOC. The reverse features a prize urn containing a palm on a table, with Greek legends denoting the city name around and in the exergue. This type was issued to commemorate a local athletic games, and the Greek inscriptions on the table (SEVERI.NYMPHIA) indicate that the games commemorated by this piece were in honor of Septimius Severus and of local nymphs. Coin grades a nice VF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around, and nice smooth green patina. A choice example of this scarce and interesting provincial type! All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax.
