CNG ebay - Caracalla. Aureus. Fine. Very Rare! Caracalla. 198-217 AD. AV Aureus (7.00 gm). Struck 211 AD. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, laureate head right / LIBERALITAS AVG VI ET V, Caracalla and Geta seated left on platform, Liberalitas standing to left holding abacus, citizen ascending steps to receive largesse. Fine, slightly wavy flan. Very rare! 717416. This rare aureus depicts the Imperial brothers Caracalla and Geta distributing cash to citizens upon their return from the Severan British campaign of 208-211 AD. Although intended to reinforce the image of a united regime, the legend rather strangely differentiates the two rulers, noting the cash distribution as Caracalla's sixth such "Liberalitas," but only Geta's fifth. In fact, the two brothers hated each other and within a few short weeks, Caracalla would have Geta murdered in the arms of their mother, Julia Domna. NOTE: There is an apparent attempted piercing of this coin (or a possible mount removal) visible as a round indentation at 12 o'clock on the reverse, between the two Gs. It does not penetrate through to the obverse, nor are there any signs of filling on the obverse, so it has apparently not been holed and plugged.
