     Caracalla. 198-217 AD. AR Denarius (3.29 gm). Struck 206 AD.
     ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right / LAETITIA above,
     TEMPORVM in exergue, ship with mast and fittings, sail raised,
     gangway to ground; above, four quadrigae; below, bird, lion,
     zebra, bear, stag, bull and a bear. RIC IV 157; BMCRE 508; Hill

     Ex Superior Galleries (31 May- 1 June 1999), lot 1122.

     The reverse design commemorates the celebration of games that
     were held with the return of the emperor to Rome in 202, a
     momentous occasion. During the festivals that followed, a ship
     with collapsible sides was constructed in the arena. When the
     sides were lowered, a plethora of rare and interesting animals
     scattered forth to be butchered for the amusement of the
     spectators.
