He was born in Lyon, Lucius Septimius Bassianus was the eldest son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. He was born in Lyon, April 4 in 188. He was given the rank of Caesar early in 196, only seven years old, and renamed to Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, suggesting a relation to the Antonine dynasty. He got the nickname Caracalla because of a hooded cloak he used to wear. Caracalla accompagnied his father as co-emperor on a campaign in Britain in 208. Caracalla was then in charge of the army, while his eleven months younger brother Geta had civilian authority. Geta and Caracalla was notorious rivals, and none of their parents were able to change this, despite many attempts. Severus died in York in February 211, and the two sons returned to Rome. The imperial government was frustrated with the joint emperors' refusal to cooperate, and the army adviced Caracalla to have Geta killed.
