VF+, very rare dynastic issue, RIC 32b (Rarity-3), RCV 6536, Vagi/CHRE 1732, RSC 2, (2.2 gm.). Lucius Septimius Severus was born in 145, and became a Senator at 28. He later served as Consul, and as a provincial Governor. He treated (and paid) his soldiers well, and used them effectively. In return, after the time of instability following the murder of the insane Emperor, Commodus, Septimius' legionaries acclaimed him Emperor. On reaching Rome, he took power, at the age of 48, after the hapless interim Emperor, Didius Julianus (who had actually bought the throne) was beheaded. He disposed of his other rival would-be emperors later, and went on to rule with much success, building many important structures, including re-building Hadrian's Wall. His son, Julius Bassianus was born in 188 A.D., and was proclaimed Caesar at the age of 8, then elevated to Augustus two years later as co-Emperor, first with his father, then with his younger brother. His ambitions led him to murder his own brother (co-Emperor Geta) when he was 24, and Geta was 21. Caracalla met a similar fate himself only five years after that, at the age of 29.
