Description This piece was minted in the name of Caracalla, who served as Caesar under his father, Septimius Severus, from 196 to 198 AD. He later ruled as Augustus from 198-217 AD. His reign was marked by extravagance and cruelty, and he achieved more in war by treachery than by force of arms. The one notable act of his reign was the granting of the name and privileges of Roman citizens to all free inhabitants of the empire. He was murdered in 217, while traveling from Carrhae. The obverse type depicts the draped bust of Caracalla as a young boy facing right, with legends M.AVREL.ANTON.CAES.PONTIF. The reverse type features Felicitas standing left, holding caduceus downwards, child at breast on arm. The legends for the type read IMPERII.FELICITAS. Coin is struck on a typically smallish Severan flan, but otherwise grades F+, with clear devices, legends clearly visible where struck up, and a nice portrait of the young Caracalla. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-95. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for orders of $20 or more. For more ancients, please visit our WWW page at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
