HJD128s - EARLY Caracalla Denarius, SKULL of a Bull 


Caracalla, AR Denarius, M AVR ANTON CAES PONTIF, bare-headed draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla as a young boy, facing right. / DESTINATO IMPERAT, implements of the priestly colleges: lituus, apex, bucranium, simpulum. An interesting type, struck 198 A.D., when Caracalla was only 10 years old. Near EF, complete legends on a full flan -- scarce as such! Sear/RCV 6672, Vagi/CHRE 1799, RSC 53, RIC 6, BMC 193, (2.9 gm.).

Julius Bassianus was born in 188 A.D., proclaimed Caesar at the age of 8, then elevated to Augustus two years later as co-Emperor, first with his father, then with his younger brother. His ambitions led him to murder his own brother (co-Emperor Geta) when he was 24, and Geta was 21. Caracalla met a similar fate himself only five years after that, at the age of 29.
