   Caligula, Æ17, (3.66g) Philadelphia, Lydia, GAI[OC] KAICAP Laureate
   head right. / ØILADELØEWN MELANØOS IEPEYS GEPMANIKOY Jugate, laureate
   and draped busts of the Dioscouri right. RPC 3018 (3 examples known
   to RPC). VF, dark green patina, chipped at edge.

   RPC notes, "That the jugate busts probably does not represent either
   Germanicus & Agrippina I, Germanicus and Agrippina as Apollo and
[ ]Artemis, or Apollo and Artemis (see BMC; Imhoof-Blumer, LS, pp.      [ ]
   116-117; Trillmich, Familienpropaganda der Kaiser und Claudius, pp.
   130-131) since the further figure can sometimes be seen to be
   laureate (e.g. 2023/1 = BMC 53). It must therefore be male, and the
   two interpreted as the Dioscuri, who had previously appeared on the
   coinage of Philadelphia."

   However, the Dioscuri play a special role on the Roman Imperial
   coinage of Caligula. The statues of Nero and Drusus Caesar, deceased
   brothers of the emperor, appear on a dupondius. The facial features
   of the reverse types do bear enough resemblance to members of the
   family of Caligula, that they have been confused before. Perhaps the
   idea should be considered.
