Description Caligula & Divus Augustus - AE dupondius, (15.88g) Rome Mint, CONSENSV SENAT ET EQ ORDIN P Q R Laureate and togate statue of Gaius Caligula seated left on curule chair, holding branch in right hand, left hand at side. / DIVVS AVGVSTVS Radiate head of Divus Augustus left, Large S C at sides. RIC56. VF, black patina, good style dies, on a full flan. While the seated figure is attributed to Augustus (?) in RIC, this example, at least, shows a togate Caligula seated. RIC notes, “H. von Kaenel, Schweitz M¸nzbatter, May 1978, p. 39 has suggested that the reverse type shows Gaius r. holding laurel, l. globe.” Struck from very good style Rome mint dies , which clearly show the seated figure to be Caligula. The obverse includes the clear facial features of Caligula on the seated figure. On other dies, the features are less certainly Caligula. cf. Ancient Portraits in the J. Paul Getty Museum, 1987, p. 89 citing a similar specimen in the Historical Museum of Bern. This coin probably features an image of an actual statue of the emperor. Dio Cassius notes, that the Senate ordered a guard to keep watch at each of Caligula's statues. (Dio Cassius LIX.26). The seated statue of the emperor should be taken to be the obverse of this coin, with the head of Divus Augustus and the S C of the Senate on the reverse. No other bronze features S C on the obverse. Heads of Augustus appear on the reverse of aureii and denarii of Caligula, while a similar togate figure of the emperor appears on the obverse of sestertii of Divus Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula, and later under Divus Vespasian.
