The fourth of the so-called Twelve Caesars, Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, was designated by Tiberius as his heir, and with the support of the army, succeeded to the throne at the age of 25. After his grandmother's death, and his illness the following year, Gaius (better known by his nickname, Caligula) began a reign of terror Rome had never before seen. Conspiracies against his rule began to be organized, provoking him to order yet more executions and exiles, even of his own family members, until the inevitable final conspiracy ended in his assassination, along with his fourth wife, and their infant daughter.
