Description This piece was minted between 39 and 40 AD, during the reign of Caligula, who ruled between 37 and 41 AD. Caius Caesar was the youngest son of Germanicus and Agrippina Senior, and was born at Antium in 12 AD. His nickname, Caligula, was bestowed on him by the soldiers when he was only a few years old; he used to like to wear the miniature uniform of a private soldier, including the half-boot, known as the caliga. He was designated by Tiberius as his heir, and succeeded that emperor in 37 AD. In his early years, when he was probably under the influence of his grandmother Antonia, he showed promise of being a good emperor, but later in that year he became seriously ill and possibly insane. Some authorities have speculated that some of his acts of "insanity", most notably the creation of his horse as Consul, may have been calculated attempts to enrage the Senate. Whatever his motives, his reign was noted for his personal depravity and public oppression, and he was eventually murdered by a group of Praetorians on January 12, 41 AD. Following his death, Caligula was officially damned by the Senate, and his image was stricken from sculptures, public buildings, and the like, and coins bearing his likeness were melted or otherwise defaced. This is why truly choice examples of the coinage of Caligula are so difficult to obtain today. The obverse of this piece depicts the bare head of Caligula facing left, with legends C.CAESAR.DIVI.AVG.PRON.AVG.P.M.TR.P.III.P.P. The reverse features Vesta seated left, holding patera and sceptre, with legends VESTA.SC. This piece grades a very choice VF+, with boldly detailed devices and sharp legends all around, and attractive surfaces. An outstanding example of the very scarce coinage of Caligula, this piece is catalouged as RIC-47. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations.
