Near VF, nice large flan, deep green patina. 714017. To this day, scholars are divided over whether Caligula (a nickname meaning "little boots" for the miniature army footwear he sported as mascot for his father's legions) was insane, incompetant, or the victim of bad press. What seems clear is that he grew up in an extended family where murder and intrigue were everyday affairs, and that he attained the throne with virtually no experience of government, unlike his forebears Augustus and Tiberius. His father, Germanicus, was the fair-haired boy of an entire generation, who died mysteriously in the East; his mother Agrippina was granddaughter of Augustus and won martyrdom for resisting Tiberius' dour tyranny. Tiberius’ unscrupulous henchman Sejanus also murdered Caligula’s brothers, Nero and Drusus. When Tiberius at long last died, Caligula was handed the principate and hailed as savior of the state. He proceeded to fritter away this huge reservoir of popular goodwill with spectacular speed. He behaved as an Eastern autocrat, experimenting with ruler-worship in ways that revolted traditional-minded Romans. Blood was shed on the merest pretext. Military expeditions to Germany and Britain devolved into horseplay and silliness that must have left Rome's enemies baffled, if not amused. His huge public expenditures accomplished nothing even vaguely permanent--he might has well have flushed Tiberius' carefully hoarded wealth into the Tiber. To Suetonius, he was a "monster" without redeeming qualities, a role model only for the likes of Nero and Domitian. Amid the contempt, fear, and suspicion his regime fostered, it was inevitable conspiracies would take root. Caligula sniffed some of them out and butchered the participants, but when a captain of the Praetorian Guard joined in the plotting, the tyrant's fate was sealed. Caligula was cornered and murdered during a gladiatorial display, learning once and for all his lack of godhead. His four-year reign produced such revulsion that the Senate briefly tried to restore Republican rule. Instead, the late unlamented's old uncle Claudius was acclaimed by the Praetorians, and the parade of Emperors went on.
