Balbinus, AR Denarius, IMP C D CAEL BALBINVS AVG, laureate and draped bust of Balbinus, facing right. / PROVIDENTIA DEORVM, Providentia, personifying the Emperor's foresight, stands facing left, holding a cornucopia and a rod pointing at a globe at her feet. EF, very broad flan, mint luster! (Note: the ''notch'' on the edge was caused during the minting process, simply because the metal spread apart, possibly because the flan was overheated, and soft.) Vagi/CHRE 2044, RSC 23, RIC 7, BMC 33, (2.8 gm.). Decimus Caelius Calvinus Balbinus was a Provincial Governor, a member of a patrician family, and a Senator. He was probably about 70 when his colleagues called upon him to serve as co-Emperor (with Pupienus). This was a necessary move, after the Gordians were killed in their Senate-sponsored uprising against Maximinus I. Although Maximinus was defeated, then killed by his own soldiers, Pupienus was very unpopular, and his return to Rome was marred by discord, provoked by the Praetorian Guard, who had even set fire to the city. The guardsmen eventually stormed the palace, and to preserve their position over the troops who had returned with Pupienus, killed him and Balbinus.
