Description: We are pleased to offer this exceptional genuine 1700+ year old Roman silver Antoninianus of Aurelian for your consideration. It was minted in Rome 274 AD and survives in very fine condition with both sides being well struck and still exhibiting much of the original silver wash which increases its desirability and value. It was during the reign of Aurelian that a major reform of the coinage took place with the size Antoninianus being increased and re-tariffed at 1/20 of an Aureus. The currency reform also saw advances in the methods employed to apply the silver wash more effectively than had been achieved previously. The artistry and mythological subjects of ancient Roman coins have always been a tremendous lure to collectors. In addition, these heirlooms of the ancient world have become extremely popular as showpieces for modern jewelry. Here's your opportunity to add this unusual 1700+ year old example to your collection. You will not be disappointed with this historic and valuable treasure. Obverse: Radiate, cuirassed bust of Aurelian facing right... IMP. AVRELIANVS AVG. Reverse: Sol standing left holding globe and raising hand, treading down one of two bound seated captives... ORIENS AVG. and... X in exergue. Size: 22 mm Weight: 4.2 grams Reference: RIC 62 - Rome The Roman god who was worshipped as a solar deity and was identified with the Greek god Helios. There was a temple of Sol and Luna on the southwestern side of the Circus Maximus dating to the first century BC. It was not until the late third century AD that Sol became established as a supreme deity by the emperor Aurelian. The cult of Sol had become one of the pagan world's most powerful influences. So strong, in fact, that the festival of the birthday of Sol, held on December 25 ( the midwinter solstice in the Julian calendar ) could not be suppressed by early Christianity. Consequently, in the fourth century AD ( between 354-360 ) the festival was made to represent the birthday of Christ instead ( previously held on the day of Epiphany on January 6 ).
