provincial issue of Augustus $12.50 Jul-20-01 AUGUSTUS CAESAR . 27 BC-14 AD-. Bronze -28mm of an uncertain mint (15.27 gm). . R: Fiscus, sella quaestoria and hasta; below, Q. cf. RPC. 5409; Syd. 1362. . Rare, important, and aVF. Edward Sydenham, writing in the mid-twentieth century, placed this coin amongst "the more important coins published by Professor Grant ("From Imperium To Auctoritas") and shown by him to have been issued by the authority of state officials." Sydenham thought this to have been an issue of Julius caesar, c. 45-44 BC, and placed the likely mint as being Thessalonica. Reserach late in the century, however, places this as being more likely a later issue under Augustus..
