RSC II 1; RIC (Hadrian) 532; BMC (Hadrian) 1094. Fine, overstruck. The obverse portrait is listed in the reference books as Augustus. Some dies show a strong Hadrianization of the portrait of Augustus. Under the reign of Nerva, Divus Augustus often looks like Nerva. Very interesting. Publius Aelius Hadrianus had a successful military career, and married wisely - into Emperor Trajan's family. Hadrian was proclaimed as Trajan's heir, but (perhaps significantly) not until after the Emperor died. With the army supporting him, the Senate acquiesced, and Hadrian began a long reign, noted for extensive travel to all corners of the Empire, the building of extensive defensive frontier fortifications, and as the Golden Age of Roman law.
