Antistius Vetus Augustus, AR Denarius, C ANTISTIVS VETVS III VIR, diademed bust of Venus, facing right. / COS / IMP CAESAR AVGVS / XI in three lines, with a simpulum and a lituus above, a tripod and a patera below. Struck 16 B.C. by C. Antistius Vetus. VF, RARE! RIC 368 (Rarity-3), (3.5 gm.). The second of the so-called Twelve Caesars is the Emperor we know as Augustus (from his title, granted by the Senate, 27 B.C.). He was born in Rome in 63 B.C., as Caius Octavius Thurinus, commonly known as Octavian. His rise to becoming the first Roman Emperor was not a swift one, but followed 17 years of conflict and empire-building after the assassination of his great-uncle, Julius Caesar. His long reign as Rome's first Emperor was notable for government reforms, construction of temples and other public buildings, and extension of the Empire's frontiers. Augustus died at 77, outliving even his grandsons Gaius and Lucius.
