Durmius, 18 BC, BM-59, Paris-205, RIC-314 (R3). Obv: M DVRMIVS III VIR Diademed bust of youthful Hercules r., lionskin tied on neck and club over shoulder. Rx: CAESAR AVGVSTVS SIGN R[EC]E Bearded Parthian soldier kneeling r. holding out standard in r. hand and extending l. arm in submissive gesture. Condition: VF Notes: Extremely rare, probably only the ninth specimen recorded. Our coin is from the same dies as Mazzini d.428=Glendining 1952 Ryan 2038=Cahn/Hess 1933 Haeberlin 3229. Six other specimens are from the same reverse die but a different obverse die: BM-59 pl. 2.12, Paris-205 pl. IX, Leu 59 1994 245=Waddell List 60 Summer 1993 85, Ratto 1930 Martini 1530, Glendining 1950 Lawrence 359 and Glendining 1950 Hall 721=Haeberlin 3230 which is apparently also the same specimen illustrated by Babelon fron the Lawrence collection but misdescribed as an aureus. Of the remaining reported official specimen, in Budapest, we have no image so cannot determine the dies; a tenth specimen, in Berlin, is from the same dies as BM-59 but is plated so probably an ancient forgery. See Banti-Simonetti, Corpus Nummorum Romanorum II, pp. 284-5 for illustrations of six of these specimens. ------------------------------------------------ Additional Specifications Number of Items in Lot: 1 Weight: 3.93g.
