Description This piece was minted circa 18 BC, under the authority of the moneyer L. Aquillius Florus during the reign of Augustus, who ruled as emperor from 27 BC to 14 AD. Augustus was the declared heir of Julius Caesar. After unifying the Roman world by his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra, he would be acclaimed by the Senate as Augustus, and this marked the formal end of the old republic and the establishment of the empire. This type of piece marks the transition of the coinage from the control of the moneyers, as in the old Republic, to the direct control of the emperor and the Senate. The obverse of this type features the helmeted bust of Virtus facing right, with legends L.AQVILLIVS.FLORVS.III.VIR. around. The reverse type features an Armenian captive kneeling in submission, with legends CAESAR.DIVI.F.ARME.CAPT. This type was minted to mark the successful Roman campaigns against the Armenians, in which the Roman standards previously lost by Mark Antony were recovered and deposited into the Temple of Mars Ultor. Coin grades a solid F, with clear devices and most legends visible, at least in part, and nice original colour. A very decent and affordable example of this rare historic type, catalouged as RSC-360, and rated as Rarity 2. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations.
