                                Description

               Augustus, Emperor of Rome, 27 B.C. to A.D. 14.
               Rare Bronze Quadrans from Lyons in Roman Gaul

     Struck in the period when Augustus and his lieutenants carried
     out the military pacification of areas in Gaul and lower Germany.
     Issued for use by the soldiers, hence the militaristic imagery of
     the legionary eagle on the reverse.

     Type: Ae Quadrans, Lugdunum (Lyons), ca. 15 to 10BC. RIC I
     Augustus 227; Sear, RCV513 where it lists for 85 pounds sterling,
     nearly 3 times as much as any other quadrantes!
     OBV: IMP CAESAR around laureate head of Augustus
     REV: AVGVSTVS above eagle with wings spread.
     Condition: Darkly toned F+/VF-. Slightly strange-shaped flan,
     which has apparently been cleaned up along the edge.
