RIC 186a var.; BMC 471. Near EF / VF, nice style, well-centered on a full flan. The obverse legend has a die engraver's error, with an I for the final S in AVGVSTVS, a genitive case showing possession or ownership. Die engravers' errors sometimes show the language that was being thought of as the die was made. For instance, some late 3rd century antoninianii have L for L in the legend. Byzantine bronze routinely mix Greek and Latin letters. The mistakes shows that the die engravers spoke Greek. In this case, a die engraver used a genitive case showing possession. This makes sense considering that the coin was issued from the Lugdunum Mint, which was under more direct control of Augustus. His name (or his relative's names) and title appear on both sides of the coins from this mint. At the Rome Mint, moneyers names still appeared on the precious metal coinage, showing at least nominal Senatorial influence. Worthy of further study.
