Description [Take me to the Barry & Darling Home Page] [Image] Antoninus Pius Denarius as Caesar Attribution: Similiar to RSC1065, minted 2/25/138 to 7/10/138 AD Obverse : 'IMP. T. AEL. CAES. ANTONINVS' with his bare head right. Reverse : 'TRIB. POT COS.' Female figure standing, head right, holding a patera. Grade : aF/aF Notes : An interesting coin minted from the time Antoninus was adopted by emperor Hadrian in late February 138 until the death of Hadrian July 10th, 138. during this period, Antoninus was most likely the sole ruler due to the severe illness of Hadrian. On the death of Hadrian, Antoninus immediately petitioned the Senate to deify Hadrian. It was for this reason that Antoninus was awarded the title of 'Pius'. It is unusual to find a Roman Imperial coin that can be dated so precisely. The coin is worn, especially on the reverse and exhibits some scratching on the obverse. But it is a good example for the type and makes an interesting, dated coin for the Roman Imperial collector.
