The reign of Antoninus Pius was part of the Pax Romana, a time of relative stability and prosperity in the interior of the empire. While aureii (a gold coin equal to 25 denarii) were roughly the same diameter as denarii, they weighed about 2.5 times as much and were valued at the traditional standard of 10 times their weight in silver.
