RIC 12. VF, dark patina, flan crack. Often called a quinarius, this issue is more likely to be either a denarius with radiate head, or a reduced weight antoninianus. As a "quinarius" this coin implies that the corresponding antonininianus would weigh 10.8g. Allectus served the breakaway Emperor Carausius as his chief Minister, and murdered Carausius in order to take his place. Since Britain and Gaul were supposed to belong to co-Emperor Constantius I, he determined to oust Allectus. After two years of preparation, Constantius and his praetorian prefect moved two fleets against Allectus' Britain, and outmaneuvered Allectus, who died in battle.
