Posthumous issue, struck in his honor, 37-41 A.D., by his grandson Gaius (Caligula). aVF, Sear/RCV 1812, RIC 58, CHRE 378, (11.3 gm.).

Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was a close friend of Augustus, dating back to their childhood. He served Augustus as Admiral of the fleet, defeating Sextus Pompey in 36 B.C., and conquered Spain in 19 B.C.. He married Augustus' widowed daughter, Julia, and Augustus wanted him as his successor, despite Senatorial opposition. To overcome that, Augustus adopted him, but it was all for naught, because Agrippa died several years later, at the age of 51. Agrippa was such an important person in Roman history that he was not only honored by several coins struck in his lifetime by his best friend, Augustus, but also by coins struck after his death by no less than five more Emperors (Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Titus, and Domitian).
